The city of Naples with history and culture: discover more!

Naples is the only city in the world to have inside four castles which testimony the dominations the city suffered in the past. For this particularity the Best Western Hotel JFK Naples, located in the tradeshow and San Paolo Stadium area close to the subway station, suggests to its guests to visit the castles of Naples and to discover the history and the past of the city.

Castel dell’Ovo

The most famous and characteristic of the castles is Castel dell’Ovo, became the symbol of Naples and its seafront. Castel dell’Ovo rises on the Megaride island, surrounded by the Borgo Marinari. Its origin is dated around the XII century: built on the Lucullo villa it was expanded by the Normans and the Angevin’s people. The castle connects its name to the medieval myth which tells the story of a magical egg able to preserve the city and its habitants from dangers and catastrophes. This egg was hidden by Virgilio in a secret place inside the castle and it is protected by a carafe placed into a cage.

Maschio Angioino

The Maschio Angioino, or Castel Nuovo, is the first monument in which you come across coming by sea: it is the access gap to the harbor and it overtop Piazza Municipio. Built by the Angevin’s people, in the XIII century, is was later renovated from the Aragon kingdom.

Castel Sant’Elmo

Castel Sant’Elmo rises up on the top of the Vomero hill and it dominates Naples from the top making possible to see all angles of the city from the ramparts. It was built in the XIV century by will of Roberto d’Angiò: the castle is made by tuff and inside tuff and it presents a star plant. The real beauties of this Norman structure are its terraces with a magnificent view of Naples, the Vesuvius, the sea and the city in general with all its majesty.

Castel Capuano

Less known but not less important is Castel Capuano. Founded in the XII century by the Normans, its name originates from the proximity to one of the door of the ancient city of Naples which opened on the street which leaded to Capua. It has been an impregnable fortress for years and, after a lot of changes, in the 1537 is was converted in a Courthouse, until few years ago.
